Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles

Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs)

Q. How do I refuel my personal NGV?

A.
You can refuel your natural gas vehicle with compressed natural gas at a public fueling station. If natural gas is available at your home, you can also  install a natural gas home refueling appliance in your garage or outdoors.

Q. How long does it take to refuel a personal vehicle?
A.
Refueling at a public natural gas station takes about the same amount of time as filling a traditional vehicle at a regular gas station. Home fueling appliances have a compressor and fueling equipment that usually involve a time-fill over an extended period of six to eight hours.

Q. What is the natural gas rate for a personal vehicle?

A.
The rate for a personal vehicle is dependent upon the total residential therm usage of all the natural gas appliances in your home.

Q. Will I see a separate line item on my bill for vehicle fueling?

A.
No. Most utilities within the FNGA do not install a separate meter to collect this data.

Q. What is the cost to install a natural fueling appliance at my home?

A.
This depends on several factors, including the retail price of the appliance, installation costs, natural gas availability, where the unit is placed, and more. Contact a qualified natural gas installer for an estimate.

Q. Do I need to notify my natural gas utility if I purchase a natural gas vehicle or install a home refueling appliance?

A.
No. However, if you do not currently have natural gas in your home, you should call your local utility to determine if natural gas is available at your residence before purchasing an NGV or installing a home refueling appliance.
Commercial NGV Applications

Q. Can I buy commercial NGVs today?

A.
Yes. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) offer a variety of passenger cars, light-duty trucks, transit buses and other vehicles that come with full manufacturer's warranty.

Q. If I choose natural gas, what are my fueling options?

A.
Fueling options include purchasing natural gas from a third-party retail outlet or installing a private fueling station on-site. Start by finding out if a public fueling is available in your area.

Q. Are NGV economics favorable?

A.
On average, natural gas is about 1/3 of the cost of traditional gasoline at the pump. The following are additional issues to consider when deciding whether NGVs are right for your business:

  • Total costs to convert existing vehicles to operate on natural gas
  • Incremental cost of OEM NGVs
  • Available federal, state and local incentives
  • Fuel cost savings
  • Maintenance cost savings
  • Queue priority for NGV taxi or limo fleets
  • Priority access to congested areas for NGVs
  • Exemption from local TCMs
  • Meeting related sustainability goals
