Natural gas is a combustible, gaseous mixture of simple hydrocarbon compounds, usually found in deep underground reservoirs formed by porous rock. Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed almost entirely of methane, but it does contain minute amounts of other gases.

The Florida Natural Gas Association (FNGA) is a non-profit organization that promotes and encourages the growth of the natural gas industry in the state of Florida. It also seeks to protect the interests of the industry, its members, and consumers. Members include distribution companies, transmission pipelines, natural gas supply marketers, and affiliate members. With a membership of more than 100 companies, the FNGA represents every segment of the natural gas industry.
Natural gas has a wide range of applications. Homes and businesses use natural gas for heat-intensive applications, such as water heating, cooking,
clothes drying, grilling, pool/spa heating, etc. Common industrial uses include manufacturing, agriculture, and standby generation. Also, a large percentage of Florida’s natural gas consumption is used for electric power generation, and it is rapidly gaining momentum as an alternative transportation fuel.
There are many reasons why natural gas is Florida’s smarter tougher energy. Natural gas is cleaner and more efficient than non-gas energy sources,
resulting in smaller carbon footprints, reduced energy waste, and the conservation of valuable energy resources. Since natural gas is domestically
produced, it also reduces America’s dependence on foreign oil while creating jobs. For the end user, advantages include greater reliability and hurricane ready comfort, as well as substantial cost and energy savings—especially when used in business and industry.
Three segments of the natural gas industry are involved in delivering natural gas from the wellhead to the consumer. Production companies explore, drill, and extract natural gas from the ground. Transmission companies operate the pipelines that link the gas fields to major consuming areas. Distribution companies are the local utilities that deliver natural gas to the customer. And since natural gas is delivered to homes and businesses via an underground pipeline, it provides nearly 100% reliable service—even during emergencies, hurricanes, and power outages.
Natural gas has a strong safety record and is considered to be one of the safest energy sources available. In fact, over the past 10 years, safety incidents throughout the U.S. have decreased by 38% due to industry efforts, while the amount of natural gas delivered to customers increased by nearly 25% during the same period.
All energy prices fluctuate, including electricity and the cost of gasoline at the pump. While natural gas is an economical energy choice, the cost is dependent upon various factors, including the volume of natural gas purchased, the associated state and local taxes, market supply and demand, utility tariffs, and more.
While rebate amounts and availability vary by utility, potential rebates and incentives may be available to offset the initial cost of purchasing/installing natural gas commercial equipment, as well as home appliances. Florida consumers can contact their local natural gas utility to learn about any rebates or other special offers that may be available to their business, home, manufacturing plant, fleet, or municipality.
